After the death of the generation of Israelites who had witnessed the miracles of God leading them out of Egypt and into the promised land, the next generation arose. Unfortunately, this new generation did not know the Lord or His mighty deeds. They turned to evil and abandoned the Lord who had rescued their ancestors from Egypt, instead choosing to worship foreign gods of the surrounding nations. This act of apostasy angered the Lord, leading Him to allow raiders to oppress and plunder the Israelites, subjecting them to the rule of their enemies. Whenever the Israelites went out to battle, they faced defeat and distress because the hand of the Lord was against them. However, when the Israelites cried out to the Lord, in His mercy, He raised judges to deliver them from their oppressors. These judges acted as intermediaries between God and the Israelites, leading them spiritually and in military matters.
The period of the judges serves as a prime example of the cyclical nature of Israel’s relationship with God. The people would fall into disobedience and idolatry, which would invite God’s discipline, resulting in their oppression by enemies. Yet, when the people repented and cried out to God, He would raise up judges to rescue and restore them. This cycle was a testament to God’s faithfulness, His desire to deliver His people, and His willingness to provide leaders who would guide them back to righteousness. The era of the judges played a significant role in shaping the history and faith of the Israelite nation.
Among the notable judges who governed Israel were Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar, Deborah (and Barak), Gideon, Tola, Jair, Jephthah, Ibzan, Elon, Abdon, and Samson.
