Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. – James 1: 2-3
Amid life’s trials and tribulations, it’s natural to question God’s plan. When your dreams come crashing down, when you see someone who does not trust in God flourish and seem to live a luxurious life while you are struggling to make ends meet, you may wonder, ‘Why is this happening to me? Is God punishing me? Why should the sinner flourish?’
Trials are a universal part of human existence, and it’s natural to struggle with these questions. However, the Bible offers a profound perspective on adversity. It teaches us that God allows trials in our lives not to punish us but to strengthen us spiritually.
James 1:2-3 reminds us to consider it joy when we face various trials. This might seem counterintuitive, but these trials serve a divine purpose. God, in His infinite wisdom, allows us to undergo challenges not as a punishment, but as a means to strengthen our faith. Just as a blacksmith tempers iron in the hottest fire to make it strong, God refines us through trials to build our spiritual endurance and maturity.
While it may not be the path, we would choose for ourselves, God’s purpose is to make us more like His Son, Jesus, and prepare us for an eternity in His presence.
God, in His sovereignty, uses afflictions to draw us closer to Him, shaping us into vessels that bear good fruit. Psalm 119:67 (‘Before I was afflicted, I went astray, but now I keep your word.’), 71 (‘It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.’), 1 Peter 1:6-7, and Hebrews 12:5-11 remind us of His purpose.
When we encounter trials, remember that they are not a sign of God’s abandonment but an invitation to draw closer to Him. You can choose to count it as joy, not because you delight in the difficulty itself, but because you trust in God’s loving purpose behind it. Find comfort in knowing that God is with you, and even in your suffering, He is working for your good.
