After the death of Judge Othniel, the Israelites once again fell into disobedience and committed evil in the eyes of the Lord. As a consequence, God allowed the Moabites to rule over them for a period of eighteen years. The Moabites were a people who inhabited the region east of the Jordan River, in what is now modern-day Jordan. Eglon, the king of Moab, was known for his cruelty and oppressive rule as he subjugated the Israelites. In their distress, the Israelites cried out to God, seeking deliverance.
In response to their plea, God raised up Ehud, a left-handed man from the tribe of Benjamin, to be their deliverer. Ehud was chosen for a special mission to confront the Moabite king. Crafted with ingenuity, Ehud concealed a double-edged sword on his right thigh, utilizing his left-handedness to hide the weapon from suspicion. He approached Eglon, presenting a tribute from the Israelites. After delivering the tribute, Ehud requested a private audience with the king, stating, “I have a secret message for you from God.” Eglon commanded silence, and his attendants left the room, leaving them alone.
Seizing the opportunity, Ehud revealed his true purpose and swiftly drew his sword, thrusting it into Eglon’s belly. Ehud then locked the doors of the room from the inside and made his escape through the porch. Rallying the Israelites, Ehud led them to take advantage of the confusion among the Moabites in the absence of their ruler. They struck down approximately ten thousand Moabite warriors, achieving a decisive victory.
Ehud’s act of bravery, along with the subsequent triumph of the Israelites, resulted in eighty years of peace in the land. His story highlights God’s faithfulness in employing unconventional means and individuals to bring deliverance to His people. The victory over Eglon serves as a testament to the power of God to bring forth justice and liberation, offering hope and encouragement to those enduring oppression and hardship.
