Othniel served as the first judge of Israel following the death of Joshua, and his story serves as a testament to God’s faithfulness in raising up leaders to deliver His people. The Israelites, having turned away from God, began worshipping the pagan gods of the surrounding nations. As a consequence, God allowed them to suffer oppression under King Cushan-Rishathaim of Aram Naharaim for a period of eight years.
In their distress, the Israelites cried out to God for deliverance, and in His mercy, God raised up Othniel from the tribe of Judah to be their judge and deliverer. Othniel was the son of Kenaz and the younger brother of Caleb. When Othniel responded to God’s call, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, endowing him with the power necessary for the task ahead. Under Othniel’s leadership, the Israelites engaged in warfare against Aram Naharaim, and with God’s assistance, they emerged victorious. Othniel successfully defeated the Arameans, bringing forty years of peace to the land of Israel.
Othniel’s achievements as a judge extended beyond military conquest; he also led the people in faithful devotion to God. His reign brought about a period of peace and prosperity in the land as he guided the people to worship and serve God alone.
